From a certain point of view, you can see some of the best artistic collaborations rooted in strange coincidence and karma. The joining of the two seemingly disparate talents of Paul Robb and Barbara Cohen to realize Brother Sun Sister Moon is no exception. Long time friends (and high school classmates back in the day), Paul and Barbara brought a diverse range of talents to the table and came away with a potent, heady record of post trip hop classics.
Not surprising, given their years of combined experience in music. You might recall Paul Robb as the founder of the legendary synth-pop outfit Information Society.
Barbara Cohen (who declined an early 80's offer from Robb to be a part of Information Society), went down a seemingly different road. Achieving critical acclaim and a huge regional audience early on with her debut group Farm Accident, Barbara's music tended toward the darker side of post-folk. When her first band went in their own separate directions, Barbara formed Little Lizard drawing both crowds and praise. "Barbara Cohen is one of the strongest voices in all popular music in Minnesota", enthused the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Audiences agreed. With the release of her first album Black Lake on TRG Records Barbara's tours have resulted in sold out shows, reams of press coverage and heavy college airplay.
Having remained in close contact throughout the years, Paul and Barbara finally made good on a much talked about collaboration. While they may have been pleasantly surprised by the initial results they were hearing, they were bowled over by the reactions of the people around them. Melding the deep groove of jazz and trip hop with Barbara's startling ability to electrify emotions in a panoply of vocal styles, the advance cassette set the offices of Hakatak and TRG on fire.
